This shows street clearances to make way for Jarrow's new Shopping Centre. Streets that were demolished just for the centre were Charles St, Hibernian Rd, Caledonian Rd, Monkton Rd. Lots of other streets were demolished at this time.

This light coloured line is where St Bede's Well is hidden out of sight. It cant be seen because it was at the bottom of a little valley locally known as 'the dip'. Photos of the Well are on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website

This difficult to see line was actually a little burn running through a little valley locally known as 'the dip'. The water came from the lakes along this valley to St Bede's well. The stream originated in Wardley passing Burn Heads farm in Heeburn and then fed the lakes with water. The Ellison family had created embankments to form the lakes in the 1870s pos 1880s knowing the burn which previously ran across their farmland would fill them. After overflowing from the lakes the burn ran towards Jarrow where it ran into the river Don. From Bede's well the burn ran through a metal grid and continued on underground coming out at another little valley called Pig Stye Avenue.

This was the Crusher. The workmen that worked on the slag heap would drill holes into the slag & put dynamite down the holes. A siren would sound as a warning to keep clear & then there was a massive explosion. The large pieces of slag was then taken to the crusher. The end product was gravel ideal for road making.

This is the Slag Heap straddling the Hebburn - Jarrow border. It was created with the molten slag that came from the Palmer's Blast Furnace's in Jarrow. It was tipped whilst still molten like lava from a Volcano. Photos of the area are on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website
