The tunnel the train is entering is the original 1860s tunnel dating from when the Midland Railway opened its 'London Extension'. The second tunnel, on the left of the photo, was opened in 1894 when the two goods lines were extended southwards from St Albans. In 1906 these were converted into the 'Slow' lines for passenger use as well as goods trains. |
