The Old Prince of Orange PH This pub was opened in 1933 and replaced the previous Old Prince of Orange that stood on the corner of Windmill Street and New Road. This had been a coaching inn and was about 350 years old at the time of its closure in 1931, due to its dangerous state.

This area also appears to be allotments. Later it became a bowling green. I remember in the late 1950s and early 1960s seeing old men watching the bowling while sitting in three wheeled invalid chairs that were hand propelled by levers. Perhaps they were injured in the First World War, or through industrial accidents.

Woodlands Park. Is this evidence of allotments as part of the 'Dig for Victory' drive in World War 2? Also, rationing was still in place in 1948. There is no sign of this cultivation in a previous view of the park in flight AFL 3715 dated 12th May 1939.

Is this the Hygeia? The Port Health Authority had a floating quarantine unit moored off Gravesend. This also provided accommodation for staff on duty and a base for the launches used for transporting the medical inspection officers to ships arriving from outside of Europe. Their role was to check on the health of the crews and to remove any suffering from communicable diseases to the Denton Isolation Hospital. The first Hygeia was a wooden hulk set up in 1922. This was replaced in 1935 by a converted steel Admiralty lighter, also named Hygeia.
