The areas surrounded by trees are the works of Curtis's and Harvey Ltd, manufacturer of gun cotton and nitroglycerine based explosives. The works were established between 1890 and 1892 by Hay, Merricks & Co Ltd for blending and storing gunpowder. This company was absorbed into Curtis's and Harvey in 1898. The trees and bushes in the photo' were deliberately planted to dampen any blast in the event of an explosion on site.
