' The buildings near this pin are the pier end toilets, recently they have been locked out of use quite early in the day. The small octagonal buildings at the pier end go back to 1858, although the roofs have been flattened - they are now used as a bar and as a cafe. The pier was first built in 1858 but wrecked by a storm. The present pier from Happy Valley was built 1877, and then an extension was added in 1894. A landing stage was added in 1891, and the large pier head pavilion was built in 1905. Originally there was a small bandstand where the pavilion now stands, but the band moved to the 1886 Pier Pavilion (destroyed 1994) next to the Grand Hotel. Francis Bedford died in 1894 and the National Media Museum Collection describe this image (cat 1990-6037-B1-2164) as "no known copyright" as the photographer died over 70 years ago. '
