' Penrhiw Colliery, this was the last pit in south Wales to have a wooden headgear. The shaft was capped by steel plates and was pumped to protect the Cwm colliery workings, Penrhiw & Maratime pits were joined underground and also joined to Cwm colliery the other side of the mountain. The pitmen from Cwm used to inspect the Penrhiw shaft and pumps on a regular basis. We in Cwm colliery also used to draw methane gas from the Maratime colliery heading on the first level to power the boilers on the surface and also discharge into the national grid '
