Newton Wood Branch off the Peak Forrest Canal. This was built to collect coal brought down by tramways from the pits scattered around Newton Wood and Newton Moor to the wharfe located at its head near to Edward Street.
This section of the canal abounded with wild life and plants. and was our favorite place for catching Great Crested Newts and collecting frog spawn. In summer some kids would swim here and in winter slid on the ice, it was a super playground and was always teeming with kids,
