' Lime kilns - limestone (calcium carbonate) was burnt in the kilns to produce carbon dioxide which was bubbled up through ammoniated brine to create sodium bicarbonate. The burning of the limestone also produced lime (calcium oxide), which was used to recover the ammonia used in the process. Waste from the kilns was transported to Wallerscote lime beds by rail and pipeline for disposal. '
