Aldermaston water troughs. Troughs were used to replenish the water in the tender of steam locomotives on the move. As the train approached the troughs, at speed, the fireman would lower the scoop to pick up as much water as possible. Sometimes he would be a little too slow in raising it again and water would cascade over the front coach drenching any unfortunate passenger who wasn't expecting it and had not closed all the windows!
