' Although this is called Banff Castle it actually refers to the site in which this building is set. The original Castle is believed to have been in existence around 1126. Archeological examinations of the site point to it as having included a motte. Due to extensive landscaping, however, no trace of this survives. An 18th Century John Adam mansion now occupies the site. '
