This is the wartime train ferry berth, built to allow stock to be carried to France immediately after D-Day to allow the re-establishment of railway operation as the allied armies moved into Europe. Locomotives, many of American construction and large numbers of wagons were shipped, the later being loaded with equipment and stores.
After the war this area was reclaimed as the Mayflower Park. Modern images suggest it has now become an industrial area with associated marina facilities. '
