' Thorngate Bridge. In 1927 this would have crossed over from Barnard Castle, which was in County Durham, to Startforth (at the foot of the picture) which was then in the North Riding of Yorkshire. In 1974 the county boundaries were changed and Startforth became part of County Durham. '
