The original line from Bishopstoke (Eastleigh) to Gosport ran straight through Fareham. When the line from Portsmouth arrived it made a curved connection to the established line, hence the sharp curve as one leaves the station for Portsmouth. Apart from an embankment covered in trees there is little sign of the line to Gosport today. There is a similar curve at the northern end of the station, where the line line to Southampton curves sharply away from the straight line to Eastleigh. This section of the original line is still open.
