' Trinity House, Tower Hill. The building, headquarters for the provision and maintenance of lighthouses in England, Wales and the Channel Islands, and for the operation of river and sea pilots, was designed by Samuel Wyatt, Surveyor to the Corporation (of Trinity House). Construction was between 1794 & 1796. The building's interior was gutted by fire after it was hit by a German incendiary bomb on the 29th December 1940, during the London Blitz. (Note the extensive destruction of surrounding areas in the photograph.) Trinity House was reconstructed and restored from photographs taken by a magazine in 1919 and opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II on the 21st October 1953 - Trafalgar day.
