This was part of the original Chalkhill Estate, an attractive development of private Metroland villas with gardens. In the latter part of the 1960s, the area was acquired through compulsory purchase and a local authority estate comprising large, system-built, high-density blocks of flats was built in its place. Inevitably, it was not long before this became a run-down area notorious for its high levels of crime and anti-social behaviour. It has, in its turn, been replaced by a low-rise redevelopment, conceived as an antidote to what the estate had become. Unfortunately, the newer estate is still plagued by similar problems. '
