' Starting point of the passenger service into Manchester and Runcorn which started from the first day the Bridgewater Canal arrived in Broadheath in 1767. Passenger barges entered the building where passengers could board. The Packet Inn stands at the side so passengers could refresh themselves while waiting. The service into Manchester took two hours and was drawn by two horses with a postillion at a speed of over 5 miles per hour. The building is still there but has been lowered by one floor. On this photo it looks like it has no roof, possibly fire damage as it is so extensive. '
