' Roupell Street. I knew this street about the time of the photo and it was bit 'down at the heel', all houses having front doors opening on to the pavement and not at all desirable. Around 1952/3 there was a TV comedy sketch (BBC only in those days) filmed on this street depicting smart City Gents (Bowlers, suits, waistcoats, & umbrellas) coming out of a row houses and setting off walking to work. The joke of the sketch being this is what people will want do in the future, to great laughter from the audience. The sketch writer must have had a crystal ball. Rents for these houses then probably averaged about £1 a week. They are now being sold for well over one million pounds.. '
