These three buildings were built in 1828 under command of Sea Lord Melville as the first Naval Hospital in Chatham, and could hold approximately 252 sailors and dockyard workers (who up until that time were treated on unsanitary hospital ships, where disease was rife). In 1905 it moved to what RNH Chatham, now Medway Maritime Hospital, and the buildings were converted to house the Royal Marines instead.
Eventually, it was demolished in 1960, and in 1967 work on the Melville Court Housing Estate began on the site. '
