' During WWII Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment was based at Sherburn in Elmet Aerodrome. This was called the Proving Ground for that reason - i.e. the place where aerial experiments pioneered, tested and proved the technical aspects of dropping heavy military equipment into theatres of war in Europe. Heavy military troop-carrying gliders were tested here, and experiments included the 'snatch' when these gliders were pulled from the ground by 4-engined tug aircraft including Halifax. Gliders tested included Airspeed Horsa, Waco and Hamilcar. A heavily laden Hamilcar glider crashed during one of these experiments, piloted by Robert Kronfield, World Glider Pilot Champion, fortunately he survived this accident. '
