' Hangars of Whitehead Aircraft Ltd (1915-1919), founded by John Alexander Whitehead. The name 'Whitehead Aircraft' can just be made out on the hangar doors in this photo. Whitehead Aircraft was a Sopwith sub-contractor, building 'Pup' single seat fighters. These were test flown from Whitehead's adjoining Hanworth Park aerodrome by test pilot Herbert Sykes OBE. Hanworth Park House was used as a Red Cross hospital for injured servicemen during WWI. The British Pathé website has a few short film clips, circa. 1917, showing the 'Mothers Day' celebrations at Hanworth Park, a line up of Sopwith Pups, and 'A Wonderful Airman - Mr Sykes'in his Martinsyde twin-seater bi-plane (in which he regularly performed the aerobatic displays recounted in 'Flight' Magazine) http://preview.tinyurl.com/d4e5xpy http://preview.tinyurl.com/ccs4bbg http://preview.tinyurl.com/bv9tva5 http://preview.tinyurl.com/dxcz54a '
