The Ballast Hill in Hebburn. Vessels couldn't come empty to collect their cargo eg coal so had to have ballast to stabilise the vessel at sea hence sand/gravel as ballast. There were lots of Ballast hills along the riverside created by the emptying of the ballast ready for the cargo. '
