The railway station opened in 1858, and is still in use. The station served trains on the original Chester and Holyhead Railway, and from 1852 the Bangor and Carnarvon Railway which branched off the Holyhead line just west of Menai Bridge station. The lines were absorbed into the LNWR, and thence to the LMS and then BR(LMR). The Carnarvon line was closed in closed in 1970 but reopened for a while following the Britannia Tubular Bridge fire in May of that year as a diversionary route for freight trains. '
