' This is the first incarnation of the GEC Osram lighting factory that was to greatly expand over the years. (The site was originally that of Hooper & Co , a company of London coachbuilders who expanded into aircraft production during WW1 on this site.) After many years of great success as an industrial research and production site, as well as being an important local employer, lack of investment in development and production resulted in activity at the site steadily running down. Production ceased in the early '90s and the main factory building was demolished in 1996. The GEC/Hirst Laboratories site is now East Lane Business Park. '
