Number 1 gun of four, South Foreland Battery (290 Coast Defence Battery, 540 Coast Defence Regiment, Royal Artillery). 9.2 inch Mark IX-X ex naval gun; range 31,000yds (28,000m); this was subsequently increased through the use of 'super' charges. Cordite charges and shells (weight 380lbs /172.4kg)were stored in an underground magazine immediately behind the gun emplacement, the entrance is visible behind the gun. Work began in December 1940, guns were installed between March and November 1941. The battery's primary objective was to attack enemy shipping.
