' Mouth of Ramsgate railway tunnel. This is almost 1 mile long and was opened by the London, Chatham and Dover Railway in 1863. In 1938, Ramsgate Borough Council decided to provide a network of 2.5 miles of Deep Shelter Air Raid Precaution tunnels linked to the by-now disused railway tunnel. 22 entrances to the shelter were provided throughout the town and the whole system was opened on the 1st June 1939.
