' Castle Hill House. In 1947 it was divided into about five or six flats owned by the local council. I was three in 1947 and we lived on the first floor; our living room had a large balcony formed by the roof of the main front window. For a small child it was a wonderful place to live, except that winter 1947 was one of the worst on record. There was little coal available and our living rooms were joined to the bedrooms at the back by a corridor. This was simply a very low partition wall (perhaps 8 feet high) running across the main landing and under that main skylight over the staircase, so it was like living in a deep freeze. By spring 1948 this was all forgotten when you had a next-door castle and 'rough' to play in. '
