Site of train crash 24th December 1874. Said to be the worst crash on the Great Western Railway with 34 People killed. As a result of this crash the way carriage wheels were manufactured was changed. Also this crash was implementary in trains having continuous brakes [brakes on every wheel controlled by the train driver, either by vacuum or air] on passenger trains.
The story goes that the nearby manor house refused to help with the casualties on this evening. A few years later when there was a fire at the manor house it burnt down because nobody turned out to help put out the fire. Unfortunately this affected the local economy [people depending on the master of the house to provide work] and that is why the village is practically deserted today.
