Lancashire Bridge, at the foot of Lancashire Hill descending from the left. No longer visible as a bridge as the river has been fully covered over on both sides.
The old pre-1974 County of Lancashire was on the left (Northern) bank of the river and the County of Cheshire was on the right bank (South).
As the Town of Stockport grew to extend on both sides of the river, some parts were legally in Lancashire and some in Cheshire. Churches on the North side answered to the Bishop of Manchester (or Salford if RC) and to the South, to the Bishop of Chester (or Shrewsbury if RC).
In 1974 Stockport became part of "Greater Manchester". '
