The Sheerline was designed by Austin during the Second World War, but production did not begin until 1947 because of the commitment to war production. It was a luxurious car in the style of the contemporary Rolls-Royce or Bentley but at a much lower price, around two-thirds that of the equivalent Rolls-Royce but still the price of five or six small Austins. The Series E announced in October 1938[8] brought a major restyle with a "waterfall" dummy grille, headlights in the wings and the running boards had gone. The car was longer, wider and heavier but the wheelbase was actually 1-inch (25 mm) shorter at 7 feet 5 inches (2.26 m). There was now an 'inbuilt luggage compartment with external access' with a space available of 'close on 5¼ cubic feet with the door closed."

A Prefect tested by the British magazine The Motor in 1948 had a top speed of 61 mph (98 km/h) and could accelerate from 0-50 mph (80 km/h) in 22.8 seconds. A fuel consumption of 33.2 miles per imperial gallon (8.5 L/100 km; 27.6 mpg‑US) was recorded. The test car which had the optional leather upholstery cost £412 including taxes. In standard form, they commented that it was the cheapest 4-door car on the British market."

"Glasgow’s Dennistoun Palais. The city venue, which had opened in 1922, was the biggest dance hall in Glasgow, with a capacity for 1800. It was said that 10 times round the dance floor represented a mile. In July 1966, the 'Denny Pally' announced plans to reduce its dance space to just a small basement, with a much larger area set aside for roller skating (The Rollerina). It was later turned into a supermarket, but there are now flats on the site."

"This building at No 7 Holborn Circus was the department store of Messrs Thomas Wallis & Co Limited. Exactly 20 years and 1 month after this image was taken the building was struck by incendiary bombs at 2.30am on 17 April 1941, the night that became known as 'The Wednesday' of the Blitz. Over 1,000 civilians were killed in the attack, which targeted mainly central and south London. Gamages, which stood opposite, survived. Police Constables Arthur Cross and Fred Tibbs took this photo the following morning. In 1961, the Daily Mirror built its premises on the former Wallis site. (see pic.) "Leicester Stadium, also known as Blackbird Road Stadium (despite sitting proudly on Parker Drive and not Blackbird Road!) was home to speedway, stock car racing and greyhound racing. Providing a capacity of 9,000 the stadium was built in 1929 and played host to the Hunters then the Lions. The threat of closure loomed over the stadium through the late '70s and early '80s. The stadium closed to speedway for the last time at the end of the 1983 season following the match against Belle Vue on 25th October (Lions lost 40-38 with Neil Collins top scoring on 10). The 'powers that be' decided that a few more houses for the city were more important than the sporting amenity that was Leicester Stadium."

"Two Horse Boxes outside the Garages. In 1930 Lambourn Racehorse Transport Service was started by Sir H. Nugent with the horse boxes of M. Scott which were repainted and located at Lambourn Garages. Four new boxes were ordered and build by Wilson's of Kingston with the horses facing forward. Stroude of Swindon horse boxes were purchased together with the horse boxes of Capt. O.M.D. Bell and H.L.Cottrill. Sir H Nugent was the Managing Director of the Lambourn Racehorse Transport Service and M.J.Scott was the Manager for about 8 years. F.W.Thatcher was the manager of the Lambourn Garages. In 1931 the Lambourn Racehorse Transport Service had over twenty five regular racehorse trainers as customers which accounted for transportation of about two thousand racehorses in the year. The railways continued to transport racehorse from the location but on a continual decline in numbers as the LRTS developed and replaced their older boxes with Lambourn patented racehorse boxes where horses faced forward. In 1933 Hobbs, Park Farm, Upper Lambourn purchased a Rio racehorse box and F.G.Templeman of Meridian, Lambourn had a Vincent horse box. In c1933 the Lambourn Garages Coach-building Section was started and built the bodies for the new LRTS horseboxes. The LRTS located a horsebox at Ogbourne and two at Wroughton pre-war. When Sir H. Nugent went to live in Ireland at the beginning of the war, F.W.Thatcher became the General Manager of his business interests in the location, until his retirement twenty years later when Sir John Nugent took over the family business interests. In 1939 the LRTS had about twelve or more boxes where the horses were facing forward, a few were dual purpose to carry horses, cattle or goods. In the war the horse boxes were also used for war work. During the war when racing was restricted, the LRTS and the railways in the location continued to transport racehorses in reduced numbers. In 1945 the LRTS purchased V.Hobbs racehorse box when he retired; this left only F.G.Templeton in Lambourn and Upper Lambourn with the required licence by a trainer to transport his stabled horses. Some year later he purchased a new larger horse box from Lambourn Coachbuilders. After the war the LRTS built more horse boxes which were larger and carried more horses. By 1950 they probably had increased the number of boxes to eighteen or twenty and transported the vast majority of the racehorses in location for forty years or more. Over the years the LRTS became one of the largest in the country. Until 1951 the railways continued to transport racehorses from the location each month; after that an occasional horse would be delivered to or from the location, the last being in 1959. In 1955 H.E. Whiteman moved his horses, furniture etc. by train at a cost of £340 from Park Farm, Upper Lambourn to Place Newtown near Malton in Yorkshire. In 1954 G.G.Kennedy moved to Ashdown Park, Upper Lambourn with a licensed horse box which he used until c1964 when he then hired horse boxes from Hunts of Newbury. In the late 1960's the Lambourn Racehorse Transport service purchased the Ridgeway horseboxes which were located at Milton, Oxon. This was at the time that the licensing laws changed. It's exactly like a Holland Loader but Euclid started making the BV's back in the 1940's before them I believe. It works like a scraper does but the dirt moves up a conveyor belt and then its loaded into a 'Bottom Dump' tractor running alongside of it. BV Loader stands for "Blade-veyor" and it was not a self propelled machine, as the image shows it was pulled by a bulldozer. Its exactly like a Holland Loader but Euclid started making the BV's back in the 1940's before them I believe. It works like a scraper does but the dirt moves up a conveyor belt and then its loaded into a 'Bottom Dump' tractor running alongside of it. Up to 5 of these dump wagons follow in convoy awaiting their turn as each one is filled to capacity. The book EUCLID: Earth-moving Equipment 1924-1968 has an entire section on the BV Loaders"

"One of the 42 Leyland Olympic EL 44.5 buses due for Cuba. 450 of these British Leyland buses had already been sold to Cuba. The sale and export defied the United States' embargo set in 1963 to isolate Cuba economically and commercially at the height of the 'Cuban Missile Crisis'. In October 1964 this East German ship the "M.V. Magdeburg" was loaded with the Leyland buses bound for Cuba when it was involved in a collision with a Japanese vessel in the Thames, ruining the buses. Controversial conspiracy theories surrounded the accident. A total of 54 crew including three stewardesses and also two passengers all survived the collision...one man was thrown into the river, but was picked up safely, and just two other persons were injured."

"The Golden Hind. For the start of the 1949 season the new attraction was a full size replica of the Golden Hind sailing ship used by Sir Frances Drake to sail round the world. The replica housed a waxworks exhibition, the attraction proved popular but by 1992 visitor numbers had dropped and the wooden structure was beginning to deteriorate and was in need of renovation, this brought the whole future of the landmark into question, a proposal to demolish the ship and replace it with a "Waikiki Wave" white knuckle thrill ride were proposed but nothing ever became of the plans and they quietly washed away. However the writing was on the wall for the Golden Hind and in 1997 it was closed to the public. The ship was then bought by the operators of Peter Pans Adventure Island. The Golden Hind had seen falling attendance figures and ever increasing maintenance costs in keeping the ageing wooden ship open, after structural survey it was found the ship needed a major rebuilding program to get it re-open to the public, the cost of restoration was too high so the ship was scrapped. A replacement ship was built, the “Queen Anne’s Revenge” it was a replica of the ship used by the notorious English pirate Blackbeard, and formed the centre piece of the Blackbeard Revenge attraction. It was an end of an era on Tuesday 8th January 2013 as replica pirate ship the Queen Anne's Revenge was demolished, this brought to an end the era of a "tall ship" being based on Southend Seafront."

"The Robin Hood Public House, 81 New Town Street. The pub was held by **J. W. Green Limited until 1954 when the company merged with Midlands brewers Flowers and took the Flowers name. Flowers was in turn taken over by Whitbread in 1962. During the late 1960s the Robin Hood was renovated and extended by incorporating the adjacent shop into the pub. Around 1980 it was sold by Whitbread to the Courage Brewery. The Robin Hood closed by 2014 when a planning application was submitted to convert the former public house into 11 flats. **J. W. Green Limited owned many pubs and off-licences' in Luton at this time. In this image one of the company's horse drawn delivery carts can be seen (see post above) further along the street at 'The World’s End' off licence (also owned by J. W. "St Mary's Primary School on Forbes Street in Calton. The main school building was designed by J L Cowan and built between 1911 and 1913. Unusually the school ROOF was used as a playground area by pupils - if you look closely at the photo you can see the children playing on the ground AND the roof, The school closed in 1990 due to falling numbers and need for extensive repairs. The building was demolished soon afterwards."

"Miller General Hospital for South East London, Greenwich High Road. The precursor to the Hospital was the Kent Dispensary, which opened in a house in the Broadway, Deptford, in 1783. In 1837 Queen Victoria agreed to be its patroness and the name was changed to the Royal Kent Dispensary. In 1851 the Dispensary was forced to move and a new building in Greenwich High Road was completed for it in 1855. To celebrate the centenary of the Dispensary in 1883, it was decided to build a hospital. This was intended also to be a memorial to the Revd Canon John Cale Miller (1814-1880), the founder of Hospital Sunday, who had been Vicar of St Alfege, Greenwich, at the time of his death and had greatly supported the work of the Dispensary. The Miller Memorial Hospital opened in December 1884, built in the grounds of the Dispensary. Its 25 beds served a population of over 510,000. It was the first hospital in Great Britain to have circular wards, which supposedly allowed better ventilation (i.e. there were no corners to harbour germs). The wards, named John Penn Ward and Beatrice Ward, were 35 feet (11 metres) in diameter and had 10 beds each. In April 1898 a new temporary wing was officially opened by the philanthropist John Passmore Edwards (1823-1911). It was urgently needed for the accommodation of out-patients, of whom 50 to 60 were treated daily, until a permanent building could be funded for the purpose. In 1908 the Hospital was renamed the Miller General Hospital for South East London. The Hospital Committee purchased a piece of land and properties abutting upon the buildings of the Hospital, which would be used for future extension. In July 1911 the foundation stone for a new wing was laid by William Heneage Legge, 6th Earl of Dartmouth (1851-1936). The William Bucknell Wing opened in 1912. The building was officially opened on 15th November by Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939). The new wing increased the bed complement to 76. It contained three wards - the Annie Zunz Ward, the Norfolk Ward (named after Mrs Charles Norfolk) and the Restell Ward (after Mr Thomas Miles Restell, who had died in 1899. By his will the sum of £5,000 would be paid to the Hospital on the death of his surviving widow. She died in 1927). In 1912 Sir Ernest Cassel gave £1,000 to the Hospital in memory of his daughter, Mrs Maude Ashley. A bed was named after her (and a second bed in 1916). The two large wards, one for men and one for women, were already occupied by patients receiving medical and surgical treatment. Each ward had a bathroom by the entrance lobby, instead of the usual practice of placing it at the far end. A small ward for one patient was also by the lobby, as was the ward kitchen and linen room. The ward floors were of black and white terrano, a lightweight, fire-proof, water-proof and rat-proof jointless flooring resembling a fine linoleum. It was difficult to keep satisfactorily clean and it was suggested that an expert would have to be hired at 30 shillings (£1.50) a week to clean it. The corridors were paved with terrazzo, which was not so difficult to clean but, in fact, cleaning of such a large area of floor and wall space in the new block required a great amount of labour by the domestic department. The lower half of the central lights of the wards were shaded, producing a subdued and pleasant effect. The shades for lights over the patients' beds came from America. Meals for the patients were brought to the wards in dinner wagons, the tops of which served as hot plates. The top floor of the new 4-storey building was devoted to the operating room and its annexes, including a bathroom for the surgeons (the first such to be provided in a hospital in England). The X-ray Department was located in the basement. The new block, with 51 beds, had cost £23,000 to build and equip, of which £7,000 still had to be raised. During WW1 the Hospital made 10-20 beds available for wounded and sick servicemen. By December 1914 they were all occupied. In 1916 Mrs Pauline Paget, wife of Almeric Paget (later 1st Baron Queenborough) opened a large Massage Department. On 21st September 1917 the Hospital took over the Mission Convalescent Home in Amherst Road, Bexhill, which had belonged to the Deptford Medical Mission. It had 14 beds and was renamed the Miller General Hospital Convalescent Home (From 24th February 1931 it became known as the Fountain Convalescent Home. It was closed during WW2 and then requisitioned by the Bexhill Corporation for housing). After the war two beds at the Hospital were endowed by the Bellingham Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club. As a war memorial, a stone tablet was placed above each bed inscribed with the names of those members and their sons who had been killed during WW1 (the tablets were lost when the Hospital was demolished). At the end of the 1920s the Hospital received funds from the remaining moneys raised for the Greenwich War Memorial in Blackheath, which was distributed to the hospitals of the Borough. In 1928 the Robinson Wing was built. It was named after John Henry Robinson, the Chairman of the Hospital from 1906 to 1931. The Hospital then had 151 beds. The new wards were named after Mr and Mrs John Morris (Morris Ward) and William Shepherd (Shepherd Ward). The new Children's Ward was opened by the Duchess of York in May 1929. It had been built and equipped with £5,000 raised as a tribute to the war dead. The Duchess also unveiled the Borough of Deptford War Memorial tablet placed in a corridor of the new building. A new operating theatre had been installed on the top floor of the Bucknell Wing, and a Nurses' Home built in Catherine Grove. In 1935 a new 16-bedded ward - the McDougall Ward named after Mr James McDougall, a member of the Hospital Board who had left £10,000 to the Hospital in his will - was built on the roof of the Robinson Wing. It was opened on 18th July by the Honorary Treasurer, General Sir Aylmer Haldane. The Hospital then had 167 beds, a Casualty Department and 18 specialist out-patients departments, namely, medical, surgical, children's ophthalmic, nose throat and ear, gynaecological, electrical, orthopaedic, genitourinary, pathological, dermatological, X-ray, dental, venereal diseases, massage, Swedish remedial, ultraviolet ray (artificial sunlight) and psychological medicine. The weekly cost of an in-patient was £3 8s 7d (£3.43) in 1935, compared with £3 6s 4d (£3.32) in 1934. A silver paper collection in 1935 had raised some £133 14s 9d (£133.74) for the Hospital. Arrangements were made with the Schiff Home to send female patients there for convalescence, while children were send to the Fountain Convalescent Home for Children in Bexhill-on-Sea, which had 16 cots. Patients there remained an average of 43 days at a weekly cost of £1 8s 8d (£1.43). A new Out-Patients Department opened in the late 1930s. During WW2 the Hospital joined the Emergency Medical Service, reserving 10 of its 172 beds for civilian or military casualties. The Hospital was adopted by the Chattanooga Branch of Bundles for Britain, Inc. for the duration of the war. The Pauline Paget Ward opened in 1947. It was named after the wife of Almeric Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough, and President of the Hospital. The weekly cost of an in-patient was £9 16s 11d (£9.85), with most patients staying on average 16 days. The Hospital joined the NHS in 1948, together with St Alfege's Hospital, under the control of the Greenwich and Deptford Hospital Management Committee, part of the South East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board. It had 180 beds. In 1949 the Almeric Paget Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department closed. It had been maintained since May 1916 by Lady Baillie and Dorothy Paget, the daughters of Almeric Paget. During its operational lifetime, the Department had provided massage, electrical, Swedish remedial, radiant heart and ultraviolet ray treatments, at a cost of over £70,000 to the Almeric Paget Trust. "Miller General Hospital for South East London, Greenwich High Road. The precursor to the Hospital was the Kent Dispensary, which opened in a house in the Broadway, Deptford, in 1783. In 1837 Queen Victoria agreed to be its patroness and the name was changed to the Royal Kent Dispensary. During its operational lifetime, the Department had provided massage, electrical, Swedish remedial, radiant heart and ultraviolet ray treatments, at a cost of over £70,000 to the Almeric Paget Trust. In 1965 the Hospital was absorbed by Greenwich District Hospital and became its Miller General Wing. It was considered too expensive (an estimated £600,000) to modernise the facilities and it closed in 1974, despite protests from the staff and local community, who had collected a petition of 12,000 signatures against the move. Services were transferred to the new Miller Wing of the Greenwich District Hospital. Present status Most of the Hospital was demolished in 1975, although the original Dispensary, General Wing building and Nurses' Home have survived. The Hospital Committee purchased a piece of land and properties abutting upon the buildings of the Hospital, which would be used for future extension. In July 1911 the foundation stone for a new wing was laid by William Heneage Legge, 6th Earl of Dartmouth (1851-1936). The William Bucknell Wing opened in 1912. The building was officially opened on 15th November by Princess Louise, Duchess of Argyll (1848-1939). The new wing increased the bed complement to 76. It contained three wards - the Annie Zunz Ward, the Norfolk Ward (named after Mrs Charles Norfolk) and the Restell Ward (after Mr Thomas Miles Restell, who had died in 1899. By his will the sum of £5,000 would be paid to the Hospital on the death of his surviving widow. She died in 1927). In 1912 Sir Ernest Cassel gave £1,000 to the Hospital in memory of his daughter, Mrs Maude Ashley. A bed was named after her (and a second bed in 1916). The two large wards, one for men and one for women, were already occupied by patients receiving medical and surgical treatment. Each ward had a bathroom by the entrance lobby, instead of the usual practice of placing it at the far end. A small ward for one patient was also by the lobby, as was the ward kitchen and linen room. The ward floors were of black and white terrano, a lightweight, fire-proof, water-proof and rat-proof jointless flooring resembling a fine linoleum. It was difficult to keep satisfactorily clean and it was suggested that an expert would have to be hired at 30 shillings (£1.50) a week to clean it. The corridors were paved with terrazzo, which was not so difficult to clean but, in fact, cleaning of such a large area of floor and wall space in the new block required a great amount of labour by the domestic department. The lower half of the central lights of the wards were shaded, producing a subdued and pleasant effect. The shades for lights over the patients' beds came from America. Meals for the patients were brought to the wards in dinner wagons, the tops of which served as hot plates. The top floor of the new 4-storey building was devoted to the operating room and its annexes, including a bathroom for the surgeons (the first such to be provided in a hospital in England). The X-ray Department was located in the basement. The new block, with 51 beds, had cost £23,000 to build and equip, of which £7,000 still had to be raised. During WW1 the Hospital made 10-20 beds available for wounded and sick servicemen. By December 1914 they were all occupied. In 1916 Mrs Pauline Paget, wife of Almeric Paget (later 1st Baron Queenborough) opened a large Massage Department. On 21st September 1917 the Hospital took over the Mission Convalescent Home in Amherst Road, Bexhill, which had belonged to the Deptford Medical Mission. It had 14 beds and was renamed the Miller General Hospital Convalescent Home (From 24th February 1931 it became known as the Fountain Convalescent Home. It was closed during WW2 and then requisitioned by the Bexhill Corporation for housing). After the war two beds at the Hospital were endowed by the Bellingham Bowling and Lawn Tennis Club. As a war memorial, a stone tablet was placed above each bed inscribed with the names of those members and their sons who had been killed during WW1 (the tablets were lost when the Hospital was demolished). At the end of the 1920s the Hospital received funds from the remaining moneys raised for the Greenwich War Memorial in Blackheath, which was distributed to the hospitals of the Borough. In 1928 the Robinson Wing was built. It was named after John Henry Robinson, the Chairman of the Hospital from 1906 to 1931. The Hospital then had 151 beds. The new wards were named after Mr and Mrs John Morris (Morris Ward) and William Shepherd (Shepherd Ward). The new Children's Ward was opened by the Duchess of York in May 1929. It had been built and equipped with £5,000 raised as a tribute to the war dead. The Duchess also unveiled the Borough of Deptford War Memorial tablet placed in a corridor of the new building. A new operating theatre had been installed on the top floor of the Bucknell Wing, and a Nurses' Home built in Catherine Grove. In 1935 a new 16-bedded ward - the McDougall Ward named after Mr James McDougall, a member of the Hospital Board who had left £10,000 to the Hospital in his will - was built on the roof of the Robinson Wing. It was opened on 18th July by the Honorary Treasurer, General Sir Aylmer Haldane. The Hospital then had 167 beds, a Casualty Department and 18 specialist out-patients departments, namely, medical, surgical, children's ophthalmic, nose throat and ear, gynaecological, electrical, orthopaedic, genitourinary, pathological, dermatological, X-ray, dental, venereal diseases, massage, Swedish remedial, ultraviolet ray (artificial sunlight) and psychological medicine. The weekly cost of an in-patient was £3 8s 7d (£3.43) in 1935, compared with £3 6s 4d (£3.32) in 1934. A silver paper collection in 1935 had raised some £133 14s 9d (£133.74) for the Hospital. Arrangements were made with the Schiff Home to send female patients there for convalescence, while children were send to the Fountain Convalescent Home for Children in Bexhill-on-Sea, which had 16 cots. Patients there remained an average of 43 days at a weekly cost of £1 8s 8d (£1.43). A new Out-Patients Department opened in the late 1930s. During WW2 the Hospital joined the Emergency Medical Service, reserving 10 of its 172 beds for civilian or military casualties. The Hospital was adopted by the Chattanooga Branch of Bundles for Britain, Inc. for the duration of the war. The Pauline Paget Ward opened in 1947. It was named after the wife of Almeric Paget, 1st Baron Queenborough, and President of the Hospital. The weekly cost of an in-patient was £9 16s 11d (£9.85), with most patients staying on average 16 days. The Hospital joined the NHS in 1948, together with St Alfege's Hospital, under the control of the Greenwich and Deptford Hospital Management Committee, part of the South East Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board. It had 180 beds. In 1949 the Almeric Paget Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department closed. It had been maintained since May 1916 by Lady Baillie and Dorothy Paget, the daughters of Almeric Paget. During its operational lifetime, the Department had provided massage, electrical, Swedish remedial, radiant heart and ultraviolet ray treatments, at a cost of over £70,000 to the Almeric Paget Trust. In 1965 the Hospital was absorbed by Greenwich District Hospital and became its Miller General Wing. It was considered too expensive (an estimated £600,000) to modernise the facilities and it closed in 1974, despite protests from the staff and local community, who had collected a petition of 12,000 signatures against the move. Services were transferred to the new Miller Wing of the Greenwich District Hospital. Present status Most of the Hospital was demolished in 1975, although the original Dispensary, General Wing building and Nurses' Home have survived. The site has recently been redeveloped by Bellway Homes Ltd. It now contains a new block along Greenwich High Road - Ashburham Apartments. "

"Miller General Hospital for South East London, Greenwich High Road. The precursor to the Hospital was the Kent Dispensary, which opened in a house in the Broadway, Deptford, in 1783. In 1837 Queen Victoria agreed to be its patroness and the name was changed to the Royal Kent Dispensary. In 1851 the Dispensary was forced to move and a new building in Greenwich High Road was completed for it in 1855. To celebrate the centenary of the Dispensary in 1883, it was decided to build a hospital. It was the first hospital in Great Britain to have circular wards, which supposedly allowed better ventilation (i.e. there were no corners to harbour germs).
