This is the village of Sunnyside, built specifically for workers at the Dalton Main (later Silverwood colliery) which is just out of view to the top right of the picture. The village is still there but is surrounded now by a number of post-war and post-Millennium housing estates.

The bricks used to build these houses were made at a brick company that was set up on the site of the colliery. Unfortunately it was unable to provide enough bricks to finish the estate and so the houses to the far left of the picture were made from a slightly different brick design, which is (obviously) still noticeable today.
