Steeple, replacing in 1792 (by subscription, organised by William Inglis) an earlier steeple demolished in the late 1780s to facilitate the rebuilding of the courthouse and jail. Designed by Alexander Laing, Erected under the supervision of William Sibbald. In its current form, as repaired following damage caused by earth tremors in the early nineteenth century.

This is an important shot, since it was taken barely a fortnight before the landslide of 8th October 1932, which led to the demolition of nearly all the western side of Castle Street, facing the camera here.
