This building was originally a standard Belfast-truss aeroplane shed built for the Royal Flying Corps in 1917 and was used from the early 1920s as a flight shed by H G Hawker Engineering (later renamed Hawker Aircraft); the parent factory was in Kingston on Thames but a long new assembly hall was built beside the Byfleet Banking at Brooklands in 1935 and used until Hawker's moved to Langley Airfield in August 1942.

In the same year that this shot was taken the circuit was closed and the site turned over to the war-time production of military aircraft.
