The Dower House, High Street, Berkhamsted

This is a cinema/playhouse. This was knocked down to the build the current Tesco's monstrosity.

Pilkington Manor House with gardens behind. This manor house disappeared not many years after this picture was taken. The current "Pilkington Manor" is the second modern building on this site and the area that was the gardens now has staff accommodation for teachers at Berkhamsted Collegiate School.

This wider area of the Grand Union Canal is a "winding" hole, an area for turning boats around. There were a lot of wharfs in Berkhamsted mainly for timber and coal but also Coopers (sheepdip fame) and the local mills used canal transport. If you walk along the canal today between Canal Fields (waitrose) and the Rising Sun pub you will find a series of interpretation panals along the towpath giving you the history of the canal.

The Boot public house, now a grade 1 listed building and has been a private house for many years. All along Castle Street there were a number of hotels and inns and in latter years "Temperance" inns. Berkhamsted had a lot of public houses being on a main road to London, the canal and it being a droving route for cattle into London's markets.

The Gardeners Arms public house on the corner of Chapel Street and Castle Street. This pub was built by the same builders as the Rising Sun pub next to the canal off George Street. If you look carefully at both buildings you will see the similarity. The Gardeners Arms ceased to be a pub in the 1960's. After conversion to a house one of the residents was John Cook, a well know local historian.

Old maltings building now used as a scout hut next to Allan & Couser Motor repairs on Chapel Street, Berkhamsted.

Totem pole? Not sure when the famous totem pole arrived at Alsford Timber wharf but it looks like it in this photo. The totem pole was a gift to Alsford Timber from a Canandian lumber firm. Timber was supplied by canal.

The Crystal Palace Public House, 19th C pub built originally to look like the Crystal Palace built for the Great Exhibition in Victorian times. Today you will find a line of tall lime trees between the road and the canal to the left of the pub.

Castle Mill, this mill used to produce animal feed if my memory is correct and deliveries to and from the mill were by canal boat.
