Birchfield Road schools. Primary school to the left and secondary modern school to the right. Air raid shelters from 1940 were located in the lower part of the primary playground adjacent to the railway line; still in situ in 1957.

Holford Drive playing fields, the games fields for the nearby Birchfield Road secondary and junior schools. Outdoor games were carried out to the chatter of machine-gun ammunition being tested nearby.

Court houses in Franchise Street (between Wellhead Lane and Aldridge Road). In the early 1950s, this area also contained stables etc for a local rag and bone man.
