THIS IS WHERE TROLLEY BUSES COULD TURN ROUND TO RETURN TO THE CITY. (Unlike trams which could be driven in either direction the trolley buses could only go forward, and because they didn't have their own engines only electric motors, they needed some method of being able to turn round whilst still maintaining contact with the power supply. The later omnibus replacements had Diesel engines which allowed them to travel anywhere without tracks (for trams) or overhead electricity cables (trams & trolley buses) |
