A fine view of Canning Town Bridge. Opened in 1934 it was the first stage of the improved road links to the Royal Docks which culminated in the Silvertown Way as mentioned in the ealier post. Walked over, cycled and drove over this bridge daily from 1971 to 76. Lived in Poplar and served an apprenticeship in the Royal Docks. My father talks of my grandfather taking him to the opening ceromony of this bridge when a huge number of steam rollers were assembled and trundled over the bridge to prove its construction. Would like to see a phot of that. Maybe in Newham Councils archives perhaps.

Almost certain this is the Bridge House public house. As far as I can make out it still exists.

The General Offices of the Thames Iron Works. Shipbuilders and Engineers. The light coloured lines to the front of the buiding are the outlines of two graving docks as seen in an image from around the 1890's. Not only slum clearance but making room for the elevated 'Silvertown Way' - a road to improve connections with the docks and other local industries.

I can just make out Holy Trinity church, Barking Road. Closed 1948 then demolished.

Where's Canning Town?

So much to see! The 'new' Silvertown Way viaduct can be seen under construction slicing its way almost north - south and designed to alleviate the traffic congestion on the old Victoria Dock Road (to the west) with its bridges and level crossings and that formed one of the main roads into the Victoria and Royal Albert Docks.
