Opened by the Midland Railway in 1857 to link them to the Great Northern line at Hitchin to provide a route to London. Subsequent problems of the MR traffic being side-lined in favour of the GN's own traffic eventually resulted in the construction of the 'London Extension' which opened in 1868.

The line to Hitchin remained as a secondary line and closed to passengers in 1961, and to goods traffic in 1964.

Bumpy Lane. To the left of this and near a brook is a small monument marking John Bunyan's birthplace.
