Munition Cottages. My mother was very proud of being "born in the Cemetery",These cottages where in the grounds of St Paul's cemetery and my mother was born in one of these in 1923. Before the family moved to Durbar Avenue, where I still live.

Whole area this side of railway line was a greenfield site in 1913. The housing units seem very basic - possibly temporary?

I remember as a youngster standing on the rail footbridge watching the trains and hearing the drop hammer of the forge works. The rail sidings near to the forge works later became a storage area for a scaffolding firm.

I will find out about this, but it will take a few weeks. I think, if my memory is correct, these may have been where shell filling operations took place. There were definitely ammunition dumps in the locality. My parents live nearby and remember a lot . I live near Manchester and will have to make copies of photos to show my parents and then travel down. I have heard them talk of the canary girls (stained by handling explosives) and know that they lived locally to this photo.....

I have just found this site today and although I was born early 1950's many of these photos are similar to things I remember.
