CARR'S BISCUIT FACTORY. This site opened in 1834. Interesting facts - The first biscuits to ever to be made on mass by a production process were made here. By 1919 the factory employed 4,000 people. It is the original home to Carr's Table Water Biscuits. It was renamed McVitie's in the 1970's when sold by Carr's to United Biscuits. Today (2020) it is still producing biscuits although now owned by a Turkish Company (Pladis). It is the oldest continually-operating biscuit factory in the world! And the majority of Carlisle residents will still refer to it as Carr's or McVities.

The long building here on Morton Street is where fire fighting equipment and horses where kept in case a fire broke out at Carr's Biscuit factory which was sited on the opposite side of Church street.

This was the dinning hall for the workers at Carr's Biscuit factory, not visible on this photo are the lovely gardens to the front of the entrance where the employees could sit on fine days. Carr was a Quaker and had a firm belief in employees being given the right to better themselves with reading skills so also provided reading spaces.
