The base is made from the base of an ornamental water fountain that stood nearby before it was replaced by the present (and inferior) one on the corner of St Paul's churchyard. See the pin marker on the corner of the churchyard for a photo of that water fountain. The attached photo was taken on the 10th December 2013. melgibbsBedford Palace Cinema on the corner of Silver Street and High Street. On the pavement here is a plaque relating to John Bunyan's imprisonment in Bedford County Gaol. The inscription reads, "On this site stood the Bedford County Gaol Where John Bunyan was imprisoned for twelve years 1660 - 1672". The attached photo was taken on 10th December 2013.

melgibbsThis water fountain on the corner of St Paul's churchyard replaced a far more elaborate one that stood nearby. The inscription reads, "This fountain is erected by the Municipal Council of Bedford in place of one presented to the Borough in 1870 by Thomas Westley Turnley. He shall lead them unto fountains of living water." The base of that original fountain was used for the base of the John Howard statue nearby. The attached photo was taken on the 10th December 2013.
