My mum was born on the Green, in a living van. My grandparent's were fairground traveller's but settled in Oldham. They had six children between 1921 and 1942 and they were all born in living vans.

The first born in 1921 was on Tommyfield followed by the other children on the Green.

I shall try and upload some photos of the family fair ground rides. They had swing-boats, shooting gallery and children's roundabout(juveniles).

My mum took over the running the roundabout from my Granddad on Oldham market until her retirement due to an accident in 2001. Most people remember my mum as Dobby Horse Vera. She lived a colourful life, and saw many changes in Oldham.

The demolition of St Mary's ward started c1963 as part of the national slum clearance program. Over the next few years *1,014 houses were demolished and 931 families (2,431 people) were displaced . Sadly this had a devastating effect on a once vibrant community and caused a lot of resentment with local people. The clearances were subject to intense study, with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government commissioning and publishing two reports 'Living in a Slum' and '*Moving Out of a Slum'. However the real impact of the clearances was best captured in a long forgotten 1963/64 documentary by Granada Television called 'The End of a Street' which gives a unique social insight from the residents themselves.

If I recall it was for children considered to be "backwards" and sadly there was a standing joke to the effect that if you were a bit thick or stupid you were then christened as having been a student at Chaucer Street School. This day and age it would be known as a school for the disadvantaged or children with learning difficulties.
