The Old Drill Hall, 31 Townshend Terrace. Former drill hall of the 9th Surrey Rifle Volunteer Corps.,( later B & C companies, 3rd Volunteer Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment.) In 1912 Brooklands aviation pioneer R. L. Howard-Flanders established a short lived aeroplane factory here. Mr J. A. Whitehead took over the redundant building in May 1915 and founded the Whitehead Aircraft Co., Ltd.

Whitehead Aircraft factory extension, opened July 1916. Aircraft components were manufactured here before being transported by road to Hanworth, near Feltham, where Whiteheads had their assembly shops. Aircraft were test flown from their adjacent aerodrome in Hanworth Park (for a short time known as 'Whitehead Park')

Thought I'd flag up these pictures looking across Kew Gardens towards Richmond Common as a follow up to the Hanworth Park images.

I'm researching Whitehead Aircraft having discovered fairly recently that a forebear worked at Whitehead's Richmond factory during WW1 and lived nearby on Manor Road.

I'd welcome any input from group members with any local knowledge about where Whitehead's various buildings were situated. I believe they had a riverside wharf somewhere and bought a Richmond butcher shop to provide better meals for their workers!
