The Cliff- Manchester United's training ground at that time. Previously (1913-1933) the home of Broughton Rangers Rugby League club. You can still see in this photo the cinder banking (the predecessor of terracing) in place after 20 years of disuse.

Record crowd 27,471 for a Lancashire Cup final in November 1931.The grandstand was supposedly destroyed by fire shortly after. With Rangers, in financial trouble, moving to Belle Vue in 1933 one wonders if rebuilding was the final straw. What also seems odd is that there is no sign of the terrace cover on the opposite (river) side of the pitch which features in many photos which is also supposed to date from Rangers time. United moved in in 1938.
