On the right of this picture is the Wentworth rd leading to Monkey Park, ( only photograph we have of monkey park ) the Cricketers arms can be seen too. Mr Newsum's farm can be seen and the overburden top soil pile from the open cast mining taking place in that area at that time. The old Colliery chimney stack can be seen, we used to pass this every day on our way to school in Mapplewell, we used to nip through the colliery yard as a short cut. Never a dull moment in those days as we could see the pit top ponies working. Wagons loaded with pine pit props were unloaded by young trainee miners. In those days miners coal allowance were usually delivered by horse and cart, Mr Ken Beachill from Swallow hill had a smashing black shire horse.
