Matthew Brown & Co. Ltd. was founded at Pole Street, Preston in 1830. It moved to the Lion Brewery on Coniston Road, Blackburn in 1927, following the acquisition of Nuttall & Co.



Matthew Brown was acquired by Scottish & Newcastle Breweries in 1987 and ceased brewing in 1991.
