Shendish Manor - This Victorian house was built around 1853 for Charles Longman of Longman's publishers. It remained in the Longman family until 1936 when the house and 90 acres of park were sold to the John Dickinson Company who used it as the company sports club. In 1994, it was turned into a hotel and golf course. See http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2272964 for a close-up view, taken by Graham Hale to whom I am indebted for the above information.

River Gade - in many places along this valley the canal and the river keep merging and parting.
