Animal feed mills benefitted by their proximity to roller flour mills. Wheat feed residues were a major ingredient. They also benefitted with their proximity to oil crushing plants which used soya from the USA and South America, groundnuts from West Africa, Cottonseed from East Africa and the Far East. The port mills at Avonmouth produced over a million tons per year output and employed over 1,000 staff. R & W Paul originated at Ipswich early in the 19th century, initially trading in malt and barley for brewers. Then maize and other foodstuffs for horses. From the early 20th century feeds for other animals
