' These are the Tar beds where liquid tar was run out to set and harden, in my youth they frequently caught fire and we were ofter evacuated from Hayes Road till it was put out. The comment "Tar Works Is On Fire Again" was often heard in our house but was ignored unless the police called. During the war we watched incendiary bombs falling around here and some rolling of the large gasometer just across the canal. Fortunately when they should have ignited they didn't. '
