' This water fountain on the corner of St Paul's churchyard replaced a far more elaborate one that stood nearby. The inscription reads, "This fountain is erected by the Municipal Council of Bedford in place of one presented to the Borough in 1870 by Thomas Westley Turnley. He shall lead them unto fountains of living water." The base of that original fountain was used for the base of the John Howard statue nearby. The attached photo was taken on the 10th December 2013. '
