' Planning vandalism? The intriguing thing about this photo is this lump of masonry which hasn't been cleared away and is in direct line with the city wall which then continues in a straight line to Northernhay Gardens to the right in the photo. As all bomb rubble had been cleared away by 1947 could this be part of the Roman city wall which was then bulldozed to make way for the shopping area at Eastgate? If so then this is just one photographic record of the planning vandalism that occurred in bombed cities in the UK in the immediate aftermath of the war when councils found it easier and cheaper to demolish partly damaged historical buildings rather than restore them.
